Architecting a 6-Layer System of Systems for Advanced Manufacturing

Penang, Malaysia – June 1, 2026 – The Safe-and-Sustainable-by-Design (SSbD) Chips Value Chain Services (SCVCS) initiative is pleased to announce that its research, titled “Scoping Review of AI, Metrology, and ESG in the Semiconductor Sector: Implications for Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD),” has been formally accepted for presentation at the 32nd IEEE ICE/ITMC Conference in Porto, Portugal.
Research Contribution: Architecting SSbD Systems
This study addresses the complex integration required to achieve sustainable semiconductor manufacturing. Led by the SCVCS team, the research proposes a novel 6-layer System of Systems (SoS) architecture. This framework is designed to integrate AI-driven metrology, supply chain Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) metrics, and federated industrial data spaces into a unified platform for SSbD manufacturing execution.
The SCVCS initiative deeply values the rigorous peer-review provided by this committee. Our contribution aligns with these themes by operationalizing a multi-layered SoS architecture that bridges TEC 1 (AI-supported roadmapping) and TEC 2 (Digital Transformation for Competitiveness) through TEC 3 (Federated and secure industrial data spaces). Furthermore, our work highlights that after foundational systems thinking across metrology and AI, TEC 4 requires attention to compliance and transparency. Finally, by embedding SSbD as the core operational logic, we address TEC 5 by establishing climate-resilient, low-carbon manufacturing trajectories that translate atomic-scale process precision into verifiable environmental sustainability.
